A Leadership Experience for First-Year and Sophomore Students!

Emerging Leaders Conference can help you find out!

Emerging Leaders Conference can help you find out!

Welcome to our new First-Year students and welcome back to our Sophomores!  We hope the first week of classes has treated you well, and you are all settling in for what should be an eventful year.

Many of you may be looking to get involved, or are looking for that next step in your involvement, or are looking for an opportunity to reflect on the work you have done thus far while here at MIT.  The Student Activities Office wants to be a partner in that process with you, and offers the Emerging Leaders Conference as an exclusive opportunity for first-year and sophomore students to learn more about leadership, their own personal style of leadership, and where that can take them here at MIT and beyond!

The Conference takes place at the Endicott House from September 27th-28th, with transportation to this great off-campus retreat location provided.

Interested students can register to attend here: http://studentlife.mit.edu/sao/leadership/elc, but only the first 30 who apply will be accepted – after that, folks will be placed on a wait-list, so register soon!

The SAO wants to be sure you have every opportunity to excel, grow, and challenge yourself both inside and outside the classroom, lab, or dorm during your time here at MIT, and the Emerging Leaders Conference is a great first step on that path!

Sophomores! Get ready to get in the lead!

Calling all sophomores – get engaged with the Community Catalyst Leadership Program!

The Student Activities Office and the Alumni Association are looking for outstanding sophomores who want to gain leadership skills while developing a mentoring relationship with an Alumni coach.

The Community Catalyst Leadership Program (CCLP) asks participants to engage in a journey of personal leadership development and reflection. Each participant is paired with an MIT alumnus/a in a coaching relationship designed to meet each student’s personal development goals. This program is open to any member of the sophomore class, regardless of prior participation in leadership opportunities at MIT.  So whether you are just starting out getting involved on campus and in student organizations, or you are the President of the Underwater Laboratory Advocacy Student Association and Secretary for the Living Poets Society, CCLP will have something for you!

Join CCLP, and instead of getting dragged back across the kitchen, you will lead your fellow MITers outside to lots of fun and success!

You can sign up and fill out your application here:  http://alum.mit.edu/students/cclp

You all should definitely consider joining this great opportunity which creates a long-lasting bond between past, current, and future leaders of MIT!

Sign up for LeaderShape soon!

MIT’s annual Independent Activities Period will be upon us again before you know it, and with so many awesome activities and opportunities you can take part in, make sure LeaderShape is on your list of options to check out!

Our Director, Leah Flynn, wrote about last year’s MIT LeaderShape experience, and is very excited to invite MIT undergraduate students to apply to the 2014 MIT LeaderShape Institute!

Why should you attend?  Well, apart from the fact that LeaderShape has been inspiring and helping students create their own leadership vision since 1995 at MIT, the Institute is one the best opportunities to engage in discussions about leadership, personal goals, and crafting a plan to turn ideas into reality that will help shape the world around you.

And did we mention it is FREE?

Use all that money you saved by going to MIT LeaderShape Institute on all the fabulous hair product you want!

Applications are due next week, Friday November 9th, and the Institute itself takes place January 17-22, 2014.

Still not convinced?  Check out some of these quotes from previous attendees:

“This was hands-down one of the best experiences of my life.  I feel both inspired and empowered to find my own style of leadership, and take it to affect positive change in my community.  Every MIT student should do this.” ~ LS participant
“No classroom can teach what I learned at LeaderShape.  I still find myself looking back at it as the most valuable experience at MIT.” ~ LS participant
“LeaderShape changed how I view the world and people in it.” ~ LS participant

We hope to see you in January!

Celebrating the First OMP Awards Banquet!

This past week, the Office of Multicultural Programs, the youngest office within the MIT Student Activities Office, celebrated another first – the First Office of Multicultural Programs Annual Awards Banquet!

Planned by OMP Graduate Advisors Jeannette Plascencia and Annie Behari, and advised by La-Tarri Canty, Director of the Office of Multicultural Programs, the banquet took place in Morss Hall, and honored students, staff, and faculty from around the Institute for their positive work in advancing diversity work around the campus.  Award winners and organizational representatives have been essential in building community on our campus, and have been key in creating and maintaining discussion around the complex issues of inclusivity at MIT.

Congratulations to all of our Award winners, and we hope to see more of you all next year.  Keep up the great work everyone!

Springtime = Awards Time!

As we quickly come up on the end of another academic year, it is time to take a moment and reflect on all that we have done: the programming, the work on developing our membership, and the relationships built with members of the MIT community.

The Student Activities Office and the Office of Multicultural Programs is happy to help recognize those students, staff, faculty, and organizations who have contributed to the MIT experience this year.  There are two upcoming opportunities to recognize those people you feel are deserving of campus-wide and community recognition for their hard and dedicated work.

The Office of Multicultural Programs is very excited to announce it’s Inaugural Multicultural Programs Banquet! This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the great work members of our campus community/student organizations are doing to foster a campus that celebrates and affirms individuals from all backgrounds.

Make sure you learn more about what awards exist and then nominate someone for these awards by April 22nd at 5pm at this link!

The Student Activities Office and Division of Student Life are currently taking nominations for the Student Leader Awards!  There are awards for both individuals and groups, and you can find out more information here.  Make sure you get your nominations in for SLA by April 26th!

We look forward to seeing your nominations, and we look forward to recognizing the awesome work that MIT community members have been doing this year!

We’ll try and keep our award presenters on top of things… we promise.
